Sound familiar?
CIS admin piling up faster than the invoices?
The Construction Industry Scheme is one of the more demanding compliance obligations for trades businesses. The 19th of every month comes round fast, and a missed return means an automatic penalty — even if no subbies were paid that month. Verifying subcontractors, calculating deductions, issuing statements, reclaiming overpaid tax: it is a lot to stay on top of when your priority is getting the job done.
- Monthly CIS returns filed late or missed, triggering automatic HMRC penalties
- Subcontractors deducted at the wrong rate because verification was skipped
- Overpaid CIS deductions sitting unclaimed because no one flagged the reclaim
What sorted looks like
With CIS handled properly, the monthly deadline becomes a non-event. Returns go out on time, deductions are calculated correctly from the start, and any overpaid tax finds its way back to you — without you having to chase it.
- Returns submitted every month before the 19th, with no penalties accumulating
- Every subcontractor verified with HMRC before work starts and deductions applied correctly
- CIS deductions offset through your payroll or reclaimed via self assessment — nothing left on the table
- Fixed monthly fee covering all CIS obligations — no invoice surprises at year end
What construction clients say about us
Clients come to us with CIS in varying states of disarray. They tend to leave with considerably less to worry about each month.

Everything your CIS obligations require
One fixed monthly fee covers contractor returns, subcontractor verification, deduction statements, and reclaim support — no hidden extras for routine compliance.
Monthly CIS Returns Filed
Your monthly CIS return is prepared and submitted to HMRC before the 19th deadline, every month. Nil returns are filed when required — a missed nil return still carries a penalty, which is easily avoided when someone is watching the calendar for you.
Included as standardSubcontractor Verification and Statements
Each subcontractor is verified with HMRC before payment, so deductions are applied at the correct rate from day one — not corrected later at cost. Deduction statements are issued to your subbies each month, keeping you compliant and your working relationships straightforward.
Included as standardCIS Deduction Reclaims
If you work as a subcontractor as well as a contractor, deductions taken from your payments can often be reclaimed or offset. We identify overpaid amounts and recover them through your self assessment or payroll submissions — which is, frankly, money that is already yours.

What makes us different for CIS businesses
There are plenty of accountants who will file your CIS return. Fewer who will catch the issues before they cost you money.
CIS is not an afterthought here
We work with trades and construction businesses regularly — contractors, subcontractors, and businesses operating as both. You will not need to explain how the scheme works or why it matters before getting a useful answer. The monthly workflow is already built into how we operate.
No more missed monthly deadlines
The 19th of each month is a hard deadline. We track it for every client, file on time, and include nil returns when no payments were made — because HMRC charges the same penalty either way. Keeping that off your plate is straightforward; it just requires someone to actually do it.
Overpaid deductions recovered proactively
Subcontractors often have more tax deducted than they owe over the year. We identify this and ensure it is recovered — either through your self assessment or offset against PAYE liabilities — rather than sitting unclaimed until someone asks. Which is more common than it should be.
Up and running in four simple steps
Most clients are fully set up and have their first CIS return handled within a week of getting in touch. The process is straightforward from your side.
Get in touch, no pressure
Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. We reply the same day. The initial conversation is free and there is no obligation to proceed.
We review your current position
We will look at where your CIS compliance currently stands — returns filed, subcontractors on record, any deductions that may be recoverable. If there is a backlog or penalties outstanding, we will tell you plainly what that looks like and what it costs to resolve.
We take over the monthly cycle
Once you are on board, we handle verification, returns, and statements each month. You send us the relevant payment information; we do the rest and keep you informed of anything you need to know.
The 19th becomes a non-event
Each month the deadline passes without drama. Your subbies have their statements, HMRC has its return, and you have one less thing competing for your attention. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
“I had the pleasure of working with Hasan for our business’s financial needs, and I couldn’t be more satisfied. They provided exceptional service, demonstrating a deep understanding of accounting principles and tax regulations. Hasan is always prompt in responding to my inquiries and made complex financial concepts easy to understand. Their attention to detail and commitment to accuracy gave me great confidence in my financial decisions. I highly recommend them for anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant”
Common questions about CIS accounting
Do you understand how CIS works for businesses that are both contractors and subcontractors?
Yes — this is a common setup in construction and one we handle regularly. When a business sits in both positions, there are often CIS deductions being taken from payments received while also deducting from payments made. Getting the offset right and ensuring overpaid tax is reclaimed efficiently requires keeping both sides of the picture in view at once, which we do as a matter of course.
What does CIS accounting cost and what is included?
We charge a fixed monthly fee that covers the full monthly CIS cycle — subcontractor verification, monthly return submission, deduction statements, and HMRC correspondence. We will confirm the exact figure after a brief conversation about your volume of subcontractors and whether you also need CIS deduction reclaim support. There are no separate charges for routine monthly filings.
We have missed some returns and the books are in a mess. Can you still help?
Yes. Catch-up work and late return resolution is something we deal with on a fairly regular basis. We will assess the current position, identify any penalties accrued, and work through the backlog systematically. We will be straightforward with you about what the catch-up involves and what it costs before any work begins.
Is there a minimum contract or lock-in period?
No. We do not tie clients into long contracts. If after a few months it is not the right fit, you leave with up-to-date books, all filing done, and nothing outstanding. In practice, clients tend to stay because the monthly compliance runs smoothly and there is little reason to change something that is working.
What happens if a subcontractor’s verification status changes mid-year?
Verification is not a one-off check — statuses can change if a subcontractor’s registration lapses or if gross payment status is granted or revoked. We re-verify subcontractors as required and update deduction rates accordingly, so you are not left applying the wrong rate and facing a correction later.
Can you help apply for gross payment status under CIS?
Yes. Gross payment status allows subcontractors to be paid without deductions, which improves cash flow significantly for eligible businesses. We assess whether the turnover and compliance tests are met, prepare the application, and handle HMRC correspondence throughout the process.
