Sound familiar?

VAT deadline looming and the numbers are not ready?

Most small business owners know roughly when their VAT return is due. The problem is the records are never quite where they need to be when the time comes. Receipts missing, bank feeds out of sync, and an afternoon disappears reconciling figures that should have taken ten minutes. Then the deadline passes and you are not entirely sure the figures were right.

  • ✕ Quarterly deadlines arriving before the records are in order
  • ✕ Not certain whether you are approaching the VAT registration threshold
  • ✕ Making Tax Digital requirements adding confusion on top of the paperwork

What a handled VAT return looks like

Books kept current throughout the quarter, not scrambled into shape the week before the deadline. Your VAT return reviewed, filed, and explained — and your threshold watched so nothing catches you by surprise.

  • ✓ Returns filed accurately and on time every quarter with no last-minute rush
  • ✓ VAT threshold monitored proactively — you will not miss a registration obligation
  • ✓ MTD-compliant from day one, with the right cloud software already in place
  • ✓ Fixed monthly fee — no invoice surprises at quarter-end

What you get

Everything your VAT compliance needs, covered

From keeping the underlying books clean to filing the return and explaining the number, the moving parts are handled. No half-measures.

01

Quarterly VAT Returns Filed

Your return is prepared from up-to-date records and submitted to HMRC through Making Tax Digital-compliant software before the deadline. You receive a clear summary of the figures before anything is submitted — no surprises, no unexplained liabilities.

Included as standard
02

MTD Setup and Cloud Bookkeeping

Making Tax Digital requires VAT-registered businesses to keep digital records and file through approved software. We set this up for you — Xero, QuickBooks Online, or FreeAgent — and keep the records current so the quarterly filing is straightforward rather than stressful.

Software included
03

Threshold Monitoring and Registration Advice

The VAT registration threshold is easy to creep towards without noticing, particularly in a growing business. Your taxable turnover is watched throughout the year so you know in good time if registration is approaching — and what that means for your pricing and cash flow.

Why Edward Harris

What makes the difference on VAT

There are plenty of accountants who will file your VAT return. Fewer will keep the books current, watch your threshold, and answer your questions on the day you ask them.

📋

Books current before the deadline

A VAT return is only as accurate as the records behind it. Bookkeeping is kept up to date throughout the quarter so the return is a straightforward exercise, not a monthly scramble dressed as a quarterly one. The figure you see before submission is the figure that gets filed.

📡

Threshold watched, not assumed

The £90,000 VAT registration threshold is not a one-off check. Taxable turnover is monitored through the year so that if you are approaching the limit, there is time to plan — not a letter from HMRC telling you registration was overdue. That is, frankly, the way it should work.

💬

Questions answered the same day

VAT queries tend to arise at inconvenient moments — a new contract, an international sale, a subcontractor asking about the reverse charge. Questions get a same-day response from an ACCA-qualified accountant who already knows how your business works, not a form response from a help desk.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most clients are switched over and filing correctly within two weeks. The process is designed to be as low-effort for you as possible.

1

Get in touch — no obligation

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. We reply the same day. The initial conversation is free and there is no pressure to proceed — it is just a conversation about what you need.

2

We review your current position

We look at your existing records, VAT registration status, and current software setup. If books need catching up or software needs migrating to MTD-compliant tools, we handle that as part of onboarding — not as an extra surprise.

3

Cloud software set up and connected

Xero, QuickBooks Online, or FreeAgent is configured for your business. Bank feeds connected, chart of accounts set up correctly, and Making Tax Digital submissions linked to HMRC. You do not need to know how any of it works — that is the point.

4

Returns filed. Deadline gone.

Each quarter, your return is prepared from current records, reviewed with you, and filed on time. You know the number in advance. The deadline passes without drama. That is, more or less, how this should always have felt.

Questions

Things people usually ask about VAT

Do you handle VAT for trades, construction businesses, and property investors — not just standard-rated sales?+

Yes. VAT for trades and construction involves the Construction Industry Scheme reverse charge, which applies between VAT-registered contractors and subcontractors and is a common source of filing errors. Property investors face a different set of considerations — exempt supplies, the option to tax, and partial exemption calculations. These are not edge cases for us. They are the type of work we do regularly for clients in Oldham and across Greater Manchester.

What does VAT return handling cost, and what is included?+

VAT returns are priced as part of a fixed monthly fee, so there is no separate invoice at quarter-end and no charge per return filed. The fee covers bookkeeping kept current throughout the quarter, the VAT return prepared and submitted, Making Tax Digital compliance, and access to cloud accounting software. Exact pricing depends on the volume of transactions and complexity of your VAT position — use the quote form to get a figure specific to your business.

My books are behind and my last VAT return may not have been right — can you still help?+

This is not an unusual starting point. We review what has been filed, identify any discrepancies, and where necessary prepare a voluntary disclosure to HMRC — which is nearly always preferable to HMRC finding the error themselves. Catch-up bookkeeping is costed separately from the ongoing monthly fee, and we will tell you what that looks like before any work begins.

Is there a long-term contract, and what happens if I want to leave?+

There is no long-term contract. You are not locked in. If you decide to move on, we prepare a clean handover for your new accountant — records in order, VAT position documented, and nothing left in a state that causes problems later. We would rather earn your business month by month than hold it by default.

I am approaching the £90,000 VAT registration threshold — what do I need to do?+

You are required to register for VAT within 30 days of the end of the month in which your taxable turnover exceeded £90,000. Registering late carries a penalty based on the VAT that should have been collected in the intervening period. If you think you may be approaching the threshold, the sensible move is to check the rolling 12-month figure now, not at the point you breach it. We can do that review as part of an initial conversation.

Can VAT registration timing be planned to reduce the impact on cash flow and pricing?+

To a degree, yes. The timing of registration affects when you begin charging VAT to customers and when you can reclaim input VAT on purchases. For businesses with significant capital expenditure planned, or with largely VAT-registered customers who can reclaim anyway, the calculation is different to a business serving consumers who cannot. This is worth thinking through before the threshold is reached, not after.
