Self-assessment tax returns

Self Assessment Tax Returns

Know your tax bill before HMRC does. Sorted, on time.

Most self assessment clients come to us after a January scramble, a surprise bill, or a return they filed themselves and were not entirely confident in. Hasan handles the whole thing — preparation, calculations, submission — on a fixed fee, as an ACCA-qualified accountant, with same-day replies when you have questions.

  • Your tax liability calculated and confirmed well before the deadline
  • Allowances and reliefs claimed correctly — nothing left on the table
  • Submitted to HMRC on your behalf, with confirmation provided
  • Questions answered the day you ask them, not weeks later

Initial conversations are free and without pressure. If it turns out we are not the right fit, you will at least leave knowing where you stand.

Sound familiar?

Still not sure what your tax bill will be this year?

Self assessment catches a lot of people out. You know the deadline is 31 January, but the actual figure — what you owe, how it was calculated, whether you claimed everything you were entitled to — often remains unclear until far too late. Some people file it themselves and spend weeks second-guessing the numbers. Others leave it until December and then panic. Neither is a particularly enjoyable way to run a business.

  • No idea what the tax bill will be until it arrives from HMRC
  • Filing yourself and not confident the return is fully accurate
  • Missing allowable expenses and reliefs you were entitled to claim

What a handled return looks like

Your return is prepared properly, your allowances are reviewed, and the figure is confirmed before the deadline. You know what you owe and when to pay it — well before HMRC sends a reminder.

  • Tax bill calculated and confirmed months before the January deadline
  • Return prepared and filed by an ACCA-qualified accountant — no guesswork
  • Allowable expenses and reliefs reviewed so nothing claimable is missed
  • Fixed fee, agreed upfront — no unexpected invoice at year end

What you get

What the self assessment service covers

A complete service from gathering the numbers to confirmed submission — handled on a fixed fee with no surprises.

01

Return Preparation and Filing

Your full self assessment return is prepared from your income, expenses, and any other relevant sources — employment, rental, dividends, or self-employment. Once confirmed, it is submitted to HMRC on your behalf and you receive confirmation. Nothing for you to log in and do yourself.

Included as standard
02

Allowances and Reliefs Reviewed

Before filing, your allowable expenses, personal allowance, and any applicable reliefs are reviewed properly. For landlords this includes mortgage interest, repairs, and letting agent fees. For sole traders and contractors it includes business mileage, use of home, equipment, and professional subscriptions. What you are entitled to claim, gets claimed.

Part of the service
03

Tax Bill Known in Advance

The objective is that you know your tax liability before it becomes urgent. That means no January shock, no scramble to find the funds, and enough time to plan if a payment on account is coming. Most clients find this alone worth the fee.

Proactive approach

Why Edward Harris

Why clients choose us over filing it themselves

Three things that make a noticeable difference when it comes to self assessment.

📋

Your Bill Known Months Early

Self assessment does not have to be a January event. Returns are prepared throughout the year as information becomes available, not in a rush before the deadline. You know the figure early enough to plan — whether that means setting funds aside, adjusting payments on account, or simply not thinking about it until the payment date arrives.

🔎

Nothing Claimable Gets Missed

The return is reviewed by an ACCA-qualified accountant who works with sole traders, landlords, contractors and owner-managed businesses regularly. That means the questions about mileage, use of home, rental expenses, and dividend treatment get asked before filing — not discovered afterwards. The allowances you are entitled to, you receive.

📞

Questions Answered the Day You Ask

HMRC correspondence, a question about payments on account, or uncertainty about what counts as an allowable expense — questions get a same-day response. You are not left waiting a week for a reply that could have taken five minutes. Which is, frankly, what a decent accountant should be.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

The process is designed to require as little from you as possible. Most clients are fully set up within a few days of the initial call.

1

Get in touch

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. Replies come the same day. The initial conversation is free and without pressure — you can ask questions before committing to anything.

2

We discuss your situation

Hasan will ask about your income sources, whether you have filed before, and whether there are any complications — rental income, CIS deductions, dividends, prior year issues. If your previous return needs reviewing, that gets noted too.

3

You send us the information

A straightforward checklist covers everything needed. You gather the documents — bank statements, invoices, P60 if applicable — and send them across. The preparation, calculation, and any follow-up queries to you are handled from there.

4

Return filed, bill confirmed

Your return is submitted to HMRC and you receive confirmation. You know exactly what you owe and when payment is due. Next January, the process starts again — only this time you already know how it works and it takes considerably less effort.

Questions

Things people usually want to know first

I have multiple income sources — employment, rental, and freelance work. Can you handle a return that covers all of that?+

Yes. Returns with mixed income sources — salary from employment, rental income from one or more properties, freelance or self-employed income, dividends from a limited company — are routine. The preparation process accounts for each source separately before combining them into the final return. If there are CIS deductions to claim back, or payments on account to plan around, those are factored in as well.

What does it cost, and what is included?+

Pricing is fixed and agreed before any work begins. The fee covers full preparation of your self assessment return, a review of allowances and reliefs, submission to HMRC, and confirmation of the outcome. There is no additional charge for answering questions during the process. The exact fee depends on the complexity of your return — a straightforward sole trader return is priced differently from one involving rental portfolios and multiple income streams. The best way to get a figure is a short initial call.

My records are not in great shape. Can you still help?+

This is not unusual. Many clients arrive with bank statements, a rough spreadsheet, and a collection of receipts rather than organised records. A catch-up is possible in most cases — the scope of work is assessed during the initial conversation and the fee reflects it. It is generally better to start with a cleaner baseline than to continue with records that are difficult to rely on.

Is there a long-term contract or a minimum commitment period?+

No long-term contract. Self assessment is typically arranged on an annual basis — you engage for the return, it gets filed, and you decide whether to continue. Clients who want year-round support for questions, tax planning, and bookkeeping move to a monthly arrangement, but that is not a requirement for getting a return done. You are not locked in to anything.

What if HMRC queries my return after it has been filed?+

HMRC has the right to open an enquiry into any submitted return, though the majority of accurately filed returns are processed without issue. If a query or compliance check does arise, HMRC investigation support is available. The fact that your return was prepared by an ACCA-qualified accountant and properly documented is a reasonable starting position if questions are asked.

Can you help me reduce my tax bill, not just file the return?+

Compliance and planning are separate things, though they inform each other. Filing the return accurately and claiming what you are entitled to is the starting point. If there are further planning opportunities — pension contributions, timing of income, structuring between a company and personal tax — those are conversations that happen during the year rather than in the weeks before the deadline. Clients on a monthly arrangement get that as part of the service.
