Sound familiar?
Still guessing what your tax bill will be?
Independent contracting gives you control over your work. It does not always give you control over your finances. Many contractors reach January with little idea what they owe HMRC, having claimed fewer expenses than they were entitled to and kept books in a state that makes the Self Assessment process considerably more painful than it needs to be. None of this is inevitable.
- No clear picture of your tax liability until HMRC sends the reminder
- Uncertain which business expenses are legitimately allowable for your work
- Bookkeeping left until year-end, making it a significant time cost
What sorted looks like for contractors
With the right accountant, your tax position is visible throughout the year, your expenses are captured correctly, and Self Assessment is a non-event rather than a January panic. That is what this service is built to deliver.
- Tax bill calculated and communicated well before the filing deadline
- Allowable expenses reviewed and maximised so nothing is left unclaimed
- Books kept current year-round so year-end takes hours, not weeks
- Fixed monthly fee so you know the cost before you commit

What makes this different from most accountants
These are specific, practical differences that affect how your contractor finances are handled day to day.
Your tax bill visible year-round
Rather than presenting a final figure in January, the aim is for you to know your likely tax liability throughout the year. That means you can budget accordingly and there are no unpleasant surprises when the deadline arrives. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
Questions answered the day you ask
Contractors often need quick answers on expenses, invoicing, or whether a cost is deductible. Same-day replies are standard, not a premium tier. Clients regularly use WhatsApp for day-to-day queries, which keeps things efficient without the formality of scheduled calls for every small question.
Plain English, no jargon
Tax legislation is complex enough without an accountant who explains it in terms that require a second explanation. Every conversation is conducted in plain English so you understand your position clearly and can make confident decisions without needing to decode the advice first.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
The process is designed to be low-effort on your end. Most clients are fully set up and have their first questions answered within a week of making contact.
Get in touch
Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. We reply the same day. Initial conversations are free and without pressure — there is no obligation to proceed.
Free initial conversation
We discuss your contracting setup, income structure, any existing bookkeeping, and what you need from an accountant. You will leave the call with a clear picture of what is involved and what it costs. No jargon, no ambiguity.
We handle the onboarding
If you are switching from another accountant, we manage the professional handover. If your books need catching up, we do that. You are not expected to untangle anything yourself before we can be useful.
Your finances, properly in order
From the point of onboarding, your books are maintained, your tax position is visible, and Self Assessment is handled before the deadline becomes a pressure. Less time thinking about your accounts. More time on the work that actually pays.
“We have been working with Hasan for almost a year. He’s been very helpful providing us with knowledge as new business owners. It’s great we can WhatsApp for general queries, making communication more efficient.”
Things contractors usually ask us
Do you understand how independent contractor income and expenses actually work?
Yes. Contractor income, allowable business expenses, home office costs, equipment, professional subscriptions, and travel all have specific rules that differ from employed income. You will not need to explain the basics before getting a useful answer. If your situation involves CIS deductions or a personal service company, those are familiar territory too.
What does it cost and what is included?
Pricing is a fixed monthly fee agreed upfront, covering Self Assessment, year-end accounts, bookkeeping support, and ongoing advice throughout the year. There are no hourly rates or surprise invoices for a quick question. The exact figure depends on the complexity of your contractor setup, which is why the initial conversation is free — so we can give you an accurate number before you commit.
My books are in a bit of a state. Can you still take me on?
Fairly common, and not a problem. Most contractors who have been handling their own books arrive with records that need some work. We will review what you have, quote for any catch-up work required, and bring everything current before moving to the ongoing monthly service. The catch-up cost is agreed transparently before we start.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. There is no lock-in period. If the service is not working for you, you give notice and leave with your records in good order. The aim is to make the service worth staying for, not to make leaving difficult.
What if I am not sure whether I should be operating as a sole trader or through a limited company?
That is one of the most practical questions a contractor can ask, and the answer depends on your income level, the nature of your contracts, and your personal circumstances. It is something we cover in the initial conversation. The tax difference between structures can be material, so it is worth getting right early rather than restructuring later.
How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is going to be?
The intention is that you know your estimated tax position throughout the year, not just when the Self Assessment deadline is approaching. With books kept current and regular communication, the January figure should not be a surprise. For most contractors, having that visibility three to six months in advance is sufficient to plan cash flow without any urgency.
Less guessing about your tax bill. More certainty.
