Tax Accountants for Doctors

Tax Accountants for Doctors

Your medical finances, handled properly.

Doctors often have layered income — NHS salary, locum shifts, private work, and a pension that needs careful attention each year. Managing the tax across all of it takes more than a generic self assessment filing. Edward Harris is ACCA qualified, charges a fixed monthly fee, and replies the same day.

  • Your self assessment filed with all income sources correctly handled
  • NHS pension annual allowance charges identified before HMRC raises them
  • Private practice income structured to keep your tax bill reasonable
  • Locum and employed income reconciled without errors or late penalties

No long-term contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean records and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Tax returns for doctors are rarely straightforward.

Most doctors have more than one source of income and more than one potential tax headache. A standard self assessment doesn’t account for the NHS pension annual allowance charge, private practice receipts sitting in a separate account, or locum shifts paid through an agency. Filing it yourself risks missing deductions, underpaying, or getting an unexpected bill months later. Getting it right consistently is what an accountant who works with medical professionals is for.

  • NHS pension annual allowance charges arrive without warning and are easily missed
  • Private practice income, locum work, and NHS salary treated as one bulk figure by a generalist accountant
  • Self assessment deadlines creeping up while clinics and on-calls leave no time to prepare

What sorted looks like for a doctor

Each income stream is accounted for separately and correctly. Your pension position is reviewed as part of the annual process, not as an afterthought. Deadlines are handled on your behalf, and your tax position is visible well before HMRC sends anything.

  • Annual allowance position reviewed annually — no charge arrives without you knowing first
  • NHS, locum, and private income each handled correctly as separate sources
  • Self assessment prepared and filed well before the deadline, on your behalf
  • Fixed monthly fee — no invoice surprises at year end

What you get

What your fixed fee covers

A straightforward scope covering the compliance doctors need and the planning that stops issues arising in the first place.

01

Self Assessment for Medical Professionals

Your annual tax return covers all income streams — NHS employment, locum work, private practice, and any rental or investment income. Allowable expenses are identified and claimed correctly. You know your tax liability months before the January deadline.

Included as standard
02

NHS Pension and Annual Allowance

The NHS pension can trigger an annual allowance charge that many doctors do not see coming until HMRC writes to them. Your pension contributions are reviewed each year against your threshold income and adjusted income so any charge is visible and planned for. Scheme Pays elections are handled where relevant.

Proactive review included
03

Private Practice and Locum Tax Planning

Private income introduces choices around structure, expenses, and timing that affect how much tax you pay. Whether you work as a sole trader, through a limited company, or a mix of both, the structure is reviewed to ensure you are not paying more than is necessary. Bookkeeping, VAT registration thresholds, and payroll are included where applicable.

Planning included, not extra

Why Edward Harris

Why doctors choose us over a generalist accountant

The difference between an accountant who handles medical professionals regularly and one who does not shows up quickly — usually at the point where the NHS pension charge arrives unannounced.

🩺

No explaining how NHS pensions work

Defined benefit accrual, threshold income, adjusted income, Scheme Pays elections — you will not spend ten minutes explaining the basics before getting a useful answer. The annual allowance position is reviewed as part of your normal year-end process. If a charge is likely, you know well before HMRC does.

📋

All income streams, one accountant

NHS salary, locum agency payments, private clinic income, and any rental or investment income all sit under one engagement. Nothing falls between the gaps because one source was handled elsewhere. Your self assessment reflects the complete picture, not just the easy parts.

📅

Year-round support, not just January

Questions get answered the day you ask them, not when your accountant surfaces in December. If you take on a new locum contract, consider starting a private practice, or receive a letter from HMRC, you have somewhere to go immediately. Proactive contact throughout the year means fewer surprises.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most doctors are set up and have their first conversation with Hasan within a week. The switching process is handled on your behalf.

1

Get in touch

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. You will get a reply the same day. The initial conversation is free and there is no obligation to proceed.

2

Free initial conversation

Hasan will ask about your income sources, current tax position, and any specific concerns — NHS pension, private practice structure, or anything else. You will leave the call with a clear picture of what needs doing and what it costs.

3

We handle the transition

If you have an existing accountant, we contact them directly to request your records. Authority forms, HMRC authorisation, and any catch-up work are managed without you needing to chase anyone. You do very little.

4

Your finances, properly in order

From here, your self assessment, pension review, and any ongoing bookkeeping or planning runs on schedule throughout the year. You will know your tax position before HMRC tells you. Considerably less to think about.

Questions

Things doctors usually ask us first

Do you understand NHS pension annual allowance charges and Scheme Pays elections?+

Yes. The tapered annual allowance has created significant and often unexpected charges for higher-earning doctors over the past several years. Threshold income, adjusted income, carry-forward rules, and Scheme Pays elections are reviewed as a standard part of your year-end process — not flagged as an add-on when HMRC has already written to you.

What does it cost and what is included?+

Pricing is fixed monthly and agreed in advance, so there are no invoice surprises at year end. What is included depends on your income sources and structure — self assessment, bookkeeping for private practice, payroll, VAT, and pension review are all available within a single engagement. The free initial conversation covers exactly what your situation needs and sets a fixed fee from there.

My books are in a bit of a state — can you still help?+

This is fairly common, particularly among doctors who have managed their own records alongside a demanding clinical schedule. Catch-up work is handled as part of the onboarding process. The cost of bringing records up to date is discussed and agreed upfront — there are no hidden fees for sorting out previous years.

Am I locked into a long-term contract?+

No. There is no long-term contract. If after three months it is not working for you, you leave with clean, up-to-date records and nothing further owed. In practice, the majority of clients stay because the arrangement works — but that decision should be yours to make freely, not constrained by contract terms.

I do locum work through an agency as well as my NHS employment — how does that affect my tax position?+

Locum income paid via an agency is typically self-employed income and sits alongside your employed NHS earnings on your self assessment. The interaction between the two affects your tax code, National Insurance, and potentially your student loan repayments if applicable. Both income streams are captured correctly and any adjustments to your tax code are managed through HMRC on your behalf.

I am thinking about setting up a limited company for my private work — is that worth doing?+

It depends on the level of private income, your existing NHS earnings, and your personal financial goals. A limited company structure can reduce the tax on retained profits, but the interaction with the NHS pension and the administrative costs of running a company need to be weighed against the saving. This is the sort of planning conversation that the free initial call is designed for — it takes about twenty minutes to reach a sensible view on whether it is worth pursuing.
