Sound familiar?
Running a construction business on gut feel and guesswork?
CIS is one of the more involved schemes HMRC runs, and most general accountants treat it as an afterthought. If your subcontractor deductions are not being verified monthly, your VAT is not being handled under Domestic Reverse Charge, and nobody is reconciling your job costs against actual income, your numbers are probably not as tidy as you think.
- CIS monthly returns filed late or missed entirely by your current accountant
- No clear picture of which jobs actually made money and which did not
- An unexpected corporation tax bill because nobody tracked what was owed throughout the year
What sorted looks like for construction
Construction accounts that are current, compliant, and actually useful. You know where your money is, your CIS obligations are met, and your tax bill is not a surprise.
- CIS returns submitted monthly, subcontractor verification handled as standard
- Management accounts that show job-by-job profitability, not just a year-end total
- Tax position reviewed throughout the year so you can plan, not just react
- Fixed monthly fee covering compliance, payroll, and proactive advice — no hidden extras
What construction clients say about working with us
These are real reviews from business owners who came to us with books in varying states. Here is what they found on the other side.
Hasan at Edward Harris has been superb for us. He has organised our books, compiled documentation for HMRC and been proactive with advice. Best accountant I have used.
I cannot rate this company highly enough. I started off with an incredible expensive company who I could never reach or get good advice from – then THANKFULLY found Hasan who has been our accountant ever since. He always responds to messages and calls so quickly, has a wealth of knowledge and experience and is absolutely trustworthy. He’s kind, response, easy to deal with, and really a great member to make up your team. 10/10 recommend.
Construction accounting that covers the whole picture
From CIS payroll to year-end accounts, the services below are designed around how construction businesses actually operate — not how accountants prefer to file things.
CIS Payroll and Subcontractor Compliance
Monthly CIS returns submitted to HMRC on time, subcontractor verification handled, and deduction statements issued correctly. You will not be chasing paperwork or second-guessing whether your subcontractors are verified — that is handled. If HMRC query anything, you will have the documentation to back it up.
Included as standardJob Costing and Management Accounts
Know which contracts are profitable and which are eating your margin before you sign the next one. Monthly management accounts give you a clear view of income, costs, and cash — broken down in a way that reflects how a construction business works. Less guesswork, better quoting decisions.
Monthly reportingTax Planning, VAT, and Year-End
Domestic Reverse Charge VAT applied correctly, VAT returns filed on time under Making Tax Digital, and corporation tax or self assessment prepared with your deductions properly claimed. Your tax bill is visible well before the deadline — which gives you time to plan rather than scramble.
Proactive and year-roundRated 5.0 across every verified review
Clients range from sole traders new to self-employment to established limited companies. The common thread is that things are considerably less complicated after working with us.

Why construction businesses choose us over a general accountant
Most accountants can file a tax return. Fewer understand CIS verification, Domestic Reverse Charge, and job costing without you explaining them first.
No explaining how CIS works
CIS monthly returns, subcontractor verification, deduction statements, and gross payment status — you will not spend ten minutes on a call explaining the scheme before getting a useful answer. We already know how it works. That saves time and usually catches issues that a generalist accountant would miss.
Your tax bill visible all year
Construction cash flow is lumpy. Big contracts, staged payments, and retentions make it easy to think you are doing well when a tax bill is quietly building. We monitor your tax position throughout the year so the January or April deadline is never a surprise — just a number you already knew was coming.
Questions answered the day you ask
Same-day replies to contact form enquiries, with quick responses by phone and email Monday to Friday. If a job has gone sideways and you need to understand the financial position quickly, you will not be waiting three days for a callback. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
Switching accountants feels like more effort than it usually is. Here is what actually happens when you get in touch.
Get in touch
Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. We reply the same day. No obligation, no pressure — just a conversation to find out what you need.
Free initial conversation
We talk through your business, your current setup, and what is not working. Whether you are behind on CIS returns, mid-year, or just starting out, we will give you a clear picture of what is involved and what it will cost — before you commit to anything.
We handle the transition
If you are switching from another accountant, we contact them directly and collect everything we need. You do not need to track down documents or manage the handover. Most clients are surprised by how little they have to do.
Your accounts in order
CIS returns submitted monthly, books current, VAT handled correctly, and a tax bill you can see coming from a distance. You get back to running the business while the compliance side runs quietly in the background. Which is the way it should have been all along.
“Hasan has been amazing and extremely helpful he has been very patient with me being new to running a business, he had given me some great advice and I will continue to use Edward Harris & Hasan”
Things construction business owners usually ask us
Do you handle CIS returns, subcontractor verification, and deduction statements as standard?
Yes. CIS monthly returns, subcontractor verification checks, and deduction statements are part of the service — not optional extras. We also advise on gross payment status applications where relevant, and ensure your records are in order if HMRC ever decide to take a closer look. You will not need to manage any of that yourself.
What does it cost and what is included?
We quote a fixed monthly fee after the initial conversation, once we understand the size of your business, how many subcontractors you work with, and what is currently in place. The fee covers CIS payroll, bookkeeping, VAT returns, year-end accounts, and proactive advice throughout the year. No hourly rates, no unexpected invoices for phone calls.
My books are behind and my CIS returns are not up to date. Is that a problem?
It is a common starting point and not a barrier. We carry out a catch-up as part of onboarding, bring everything current, and deal with any late filing penalties or HMRC correspondence that needs addressing. There may be a one-off catch-up fee depending on how far behind things are — we will tell you exactly what that looks like before you commit.
Is there a long-term contract or minimum term?
No long-term contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed. We do ask for a month’s notice once you are set up, which is a reasonable amount of time to arrange a smooth handover to whoever comes next.
Do you deal with Domestic Reverse Charge VAT for construction?
Yes. Domestic Reverse Charge applies to most VAT-registered construction businesses supplying services to other VAT-registered businesses, and getting it wrong creates problems with both HMRC and your clients. We apply it correctly from the outset and review your invoicing to make sure the output is right — before HMRC flags it rather than after.
Can you help me reduce my tax bill as a construction business owner?
Year-round tax planning is part of the service, not an add-on you have to request. That means reviewing your salary and dividend mix if you are a limited company director, ensuring all allowable business expenses and capital allowances on plant and equipment are properly claimed, and flagging any planning opportunities before the year-end. You will know your tax position well ahead of the filing deadline.
Less paperwork, fewer surprises, more time on the tools.
Fixed monthly fee, CIS handled as standard, and a tax bill you can see coming. Initial conversations are free and without pressure — call, email, or use the form.
