Sound familiar?

Still working out the CIS yourself?

Construction businesses carry a specific compliance burden that most general bookkeeping software does not handle on its own. CIS deductions, subcontractor verification, mixed VAT rates on materials and labour — each one takes time you probably do not have. When the books fall behind on a busy site schedule, catching up is rarely straightforward.

  • ✕ CIS returns filed late or incorrectly, risking HMRC penalties
  • ✕ Subcontractor records scattered across jobs with no clear overview
  • ✕ No reliable picture of the tax bill until year end arrives

What a sorted construction business looks like

Your CIS obligations are handled each month. Subcontractor records are maintained, deductions are correct, and your books reflect the actual state of the business — not a historical estimate assembled at year end.

  • ✓ CIS returns filed on time, subcontractors verified and records maintained monthly
  • ✓ Books organised by project and subcontractor, clear and current
  • ✓ Tax position visible throughout the year — no year-end surprises
  • ✓ Fixed monthly fee — know exactly what you pay, nothing added

Why Edward Harris

Why construction businesses choose us

Three things that make a practical difference when your accountant already understands how the trade works.

🔨

CIS handled without explanation

CIS deductions, subcontractor verification, gross payment status — you will not spend the first call explaining how the Construction Industry Scheme works. It is part of what we do day to day. Your returns are prepared with the compliance detail that HMRC expects.

📅

Proactive throughout the year

Compliance does not stop at the year-end filing. VAT thresholds, payroll deadlines, and tax payment dates are tracked on your behalf throughout the year. Issues are flagged before they become penalties, not discovered when correspondence arrives.

📞

Questions answered the same day

When something comes up on site — a subcontractor query, an HMRC letter, a cash flow question — you get an answer the day you ask. Contact by phone, email, or enquiry form, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. No waiting a week for a callback.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Switching accountants or starting fresh takes considerably less effort than most people expect. Here is exactly what happens.

1

Get in touch

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. We reply the same day. The initial conversation is free and there is no pressure to proceed.

2

We discuss your situation

Hasan will ask about your business structure, current setup, and what is and is not working. If your books are behind or your previous accountant left things in some state of disarray, that is a familiar starting point — not a problem.

3

We agree a fixed fee

A clear proposal is sent with a fixed monthly fee covering exactly what was discussed. No hourly rates, no surprise invoices at year end. You know what you are paying before anything is signed.

4

Your finances, handled

CIS, payroll, VAT, bookkeeping — it moves off your plate. Your books are maintained, your deadlines are met, and your tax position is visible throughout the year. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

Questions

Things construction businesses usually ask

Do you actually understand CIS, subcontractor deductions, and gross payment status?+

Yes — the Construction Industry Scheme is a regular part of what we handle, not an occasional exception. We manage subcontractor verification, calculate deductions at the correct rate for each worker, prepare the monthly CIS return, and issue payment and deduction statements. Gross payment status applications and renewals are something we can advise on and support when the threshold conditions are met.

What does it cost, and what is included?+

Pricing is fixed monthly and agreed upfront based on your specific situation — business structure, number of subcontractors, VAT status, and any additional requirements. There are no hourly rates and no year-end surprises. The fixed fee covers the services discussed at your initial consultation, and any changes to scope are agreed in advance before any additional cost is incurred.

My books are behind and my previous accountant left things in a state. Can you still help?+

That is a fairly common starting point. The first step is understanding what is outstanding and what data exists — we have worked with books in various states and the catch-up process is straightforward when handled methodically. Any catch-up work required before the ongoing service begins would be scoped and priced separately, so you know the full picture before committing.

Is there a long-term contract or lock-in?+

No long-term contract. If it is not working, you are not tied in. Your records remain yours, and we will ensure everything is handed over cleanly to whoever takes over. The goal is to make the service worth staying for — not to make leaving difficult.

How does the VAT domestic reverse charge for construction affect my returns?+

The domestic reverse charge applies to most construction services supplied between VAT-registered businesses within the CIS, and it changes how VAT is reported on your return. It affects both the output and input tax figures you declare, which can have a significant impact on cash flow if handled incorrectly. We apply the correct treatment as a matter of course — you will not inadvertently over-declare or under-declare VAT on CIS-liable supplies.

Can you help reduce my tax bill, not just file the return?+

Yes. Tax planning is part of the service, not a separate engagement. For construction businesses this typically includes maximising capital allowances on plant, machinery, and commercial vehicles, structuring subcontractor versus employment arrangements correctly, and timing income and expenditure to manage the tax liability across the year. The aim is to know the bill in advance and keep it as low as legitimately possible.
