Sound familiar?
Construction finances are complicated. Most accountants treat them as standard.
CIS deductions, subcontractor verification, VAT reverse charge, mixed payroll — construction companies carry more compliance obligations than almost any other trade. When an accountant does not already know the industry, you end up explaining it to them. Or worse, errors land with HMRC that could have been avoided.
- ✕ CIS monthly returns and subcontractor records falling behind
- ✕ VAT reverse charge applied incorrectly or not understood by your accountant
- ✕ No clear view of job profitability — just a year-end surprise
What sorted looks like for construction
When the records are current and the obligations are handled, running a construction business becomes considerably less complicated. You know what you owe, what you are owed, and which jobs are worth taking on again.
- ✓ CIS returns filed monthly, subcontractor records maintained, deductions tracked accurately
- ✓ VAT reverse charge handled correctly — you will not need to explain it first
- ✓ Job costing tracked so each project’s margin is visible, not guesswork
- ✓ Fixed monthly fee — no unexpected bills at year-end
What construction business owners say
These are unedited Google reviews from clients who came to us with disorganised books, HMRC obligations, and not enough clarity over their numbers.
Hasan at Edward Harris has been superb for us. He has organised our books, compiled documentation for HMRC and been proactive with advice. Best accountant I have used.
I cannot rate this company highly enough. I started off with an incredible expensive company who I could never reach or get good advice from – then THANKFULLY found Hasan who has been our accountant ever since. He always responds to messages and calls so quickly, has a wealth of knowledge and experience and is absolutely trustworthy.
Everything a construction company needs, covered
From monthly CIS returns and subcontractor payroll to year-end accounts and corporation tax — all handled under one fixed monthly fee.
CIS Payroll and Subcontractor Returns
Your monthly CIS return is filed on time without you having to chase it. Subcontractor verification, deduction statements, and HMRC submissions are all handled. If you take on new subbies mid-month, that is covered too.
Included as standardVAT Returns and Reverse Charge
The domestic reverse charge catches out plenty of construction businesses — and their accountants. Your VAT returns are prepared with the reverse charge applied correctly, so there are no errors sitting undetected until an HMRC enquiry surfaces them.
Included as standardYear-End Accounts and Corporation Tax
Your year-end accounts and CT600 are prepared accurately, with tax planning built in throughout the year rather than bolted on at the end. You will know your tax liability well before the payment deadline, which is rather the point.
Included as standardConsistent results across different businesses
Clients range from sole traders and new start-ups to growing limited companies. The common thread is that they leave knowing their numbers and what to do next.
Helpful Knowledge for New Business Owners
“We have been working with Hasan for almost a year. He’s been very helpful providing us with knowledge as new business owners. It’s great we can WhatsApp for general queries, making communication more efficient.”
Swift, Hassle-Free Accounts Sorted Quickly
“Excellent service! Hasan took over and sorted out my accounts with a swift and hassle free service. I would highly recommend for your accounting needs.”
Made Complex Financial Concepts Easy to Understand
“Hasan is always prompt in responding to my inquiries and made complex financial concepts easy to understand. Their attention to detail and commitment to accuracy gave me great confidence in my financial decisions.”
Why construction companies switch to us
There are plenty of general accountants. Not many who already know how a construction business works before you explain it.
No explaining CIS from scratch
CIS deductions, gross payment status, subcontractor verification, mixed PAYE and CIS payroll — these are handled as a matter of course, not a special request. You will not spend the first meeting bringing your accountant up to speed on how your industry works.
VAT reverse charge, done correctly
The domestic reverse charge in construction is a common source of errors, particularly where businesses use a mix of VAT-registered and non-registered subcontractors. Your returns are prepared correctly from the outset, with the right treatment applied to each transaction.
Tax bill visible months in advance
Proactive support throughout the year means your corporation tax liability is calculated well before the payment falls due. There are no year-end conversations that start with ‘you owe more than expected.’ Surprises are largely avoidable when the books are current.
Up and running in four steps
Switching accountants sounds like more effort than it is. Most clients are set up and handed back within a fortnight, often with books in considerably better shape than before.

Free initial conversation
We will discuss your situation — your trade, your current setup, what is working and what is not. If you have CIS obligations, payroll, or a backlog to clear, we will explain what is involved honestly. No jargon, no pressure.
We handle the transition
If you are switching from another accountant, we contact them directly for your records and handle the HMRC authorisation process. You do not need to chase anyone. We let you know when it is done.
Your accounts are in order
From month one, your CIS returns are filed, your records are maintained, and your tax position is visible. Which is, frankly, the way it should always have been.
“Hasan has been amazing and extremely helpful he has been very patient with me being new to running a business, he had given me some great advice and I will continue to use Edward Harris & Hasan”
Questions construction companies usually ask
Do you actually understand CIS, subcontractor deductions, and the VAT reverse charge?
Yes — these are standard parts of construction accounting rather than edge cases we handle occasionally. CIS deductions, gross payment status applications, subcontractor verification, and the domestic reverse charge for VAT are all dealt with as a matter of course. You will not need to explain how any of it works before getting a useful answer.
What does it cost and what is included?
Pricing is fixed monthly and agreed in advance — there are no hourly rates or year-end invoices for extra work. The exact fee depends on the size of your business, whether you need CIS payroll, how many subcontractors you pay, and your VAT and payroll requirements. We discuss all of this in the initial conversation and confirm it in writing before anything starts.
My books are behind and I am not sure what state they are in — is that a problem?
It is not unusual. Most clients who switch come with records in varying states of order. We assess what needs catching up, give you a clear picture of the work involved, and agree any catch-up costs transparently before we begin. Once the backlog is cleared, everything moves to a clean monthly routine.
Am I tied into a long-term contract?
No. There is no long-term lock-in. If after three months it is not working, you leave with your records in order and nothing outstanding. In practice, clients tend to stay because the service is consistent — but that is down to results, not contractual obligation.
Can you handle both CIS and PAYE payroll if we have a mixed workforce?
Yes. Mixed workforces — some employees on PAYE, some subcontractors under CIS — are handled as a single service. The right treatment is applied to each worker depending on their status, deductions are calculated accurately, and both the CIS monthly return and the PAYE RTI submissions are filed on time.
Can you help us reduce our tax bill through proper job costing and capital allowances?
Year-round tax planning is part of the service, not an annual afterthought. That includes ensuring capital allowances on plant, tools, and vehicles are correctly claimed, reviewing job costing to understand profitability, and structuring drawings and salary in a tax-efficient way. The aim is that you know your likely tax liability in advance — not after the year has already closed.
