Sound familiar?

Bookkeeping piling up faster than you can manage it?

Most owner-managed businesses in Oldham start with good intentions about keeping the records tidy. Then a busy month arrives, receipts get missed, and the bank never quite matches what you think it should. By the time a deadline appears, you are reconciling months of transactions in a weekend.

  • ✕ Receipts in a drawer and bank reconciliation months behind
  • ✕ No clear picture of profit until the year-end accountant calls
  • ✕ VAT returns filed in a hurry with figures you are not confident in

What sorted bookkeeping looks like

When the books are current, everything downstream is easier — VAT returns, management decisions, and year-end accounts. This is what regular, structured bookkeeping actually gives you.

  • ✓ Records reconciled monthly so nothing builds up into a problem
  • ✓ Profit and cash position visible month by month, not once a year
  • ✓ VAT returns filed on time with figures you have already seen and agreed
  • ✓ Fixed monthly fee — no surprise bills for routine work

What you get

Everything your books need, month by month

Bookkeeping at Edward Harris is not a once-a-year exercise. It covers your records, your software, and your compliance — handled on a regular cycle so nothing falls behind.

01

Cloud Bookkeeping, Done Monthly

Transactions are coded, reconciled, and kept current every month using Xero, QuickBooks Online, or FreeAgent — whichever suits your business. You have a real-time view of income, outgoings, and bank position without opening a spreadsheet. Dext receipt capture is included so paper receipts stop accumulating in a drawer.

Included as standard
02

VAT Returns and MTD Compliance

Your VAT return is prepared from your up-to-date records and submitted through MTD-compliant software — no last-minute data gathering required. Your VAT threshold is monitored throughout the year so a registration obligation does not arrive unannounced. If your circumstances change, you will know about it before HMRC does.

MTD-compliant
03

Year-End Ready, All Year

Clean monthly books mean your year-end accounts and corporation tax return are straightforward rather than a scramble. There is no need to reconstruct twelve months of transactions in a hurry, and your accountant already knows the numbers. The result is a year-end process that takes days rather than weeks.

Why Edward Harris

Why Oldham businesses choose us for bookkeeping

There is no shortage of bookkeepers. Here is what is different about working with a chartered accountant who treats your records as the foundation of better decisions — not just a compliance box.

📊

Your numbers explained, not just filed

Most bookkeeping services hand you a report and leave you to interpret it. At Edward Harris, the numbers are explained in plain English so you actually understand your position. If something looks off or an opportunity appears, you will hear about it — not at year-end, but when it is still useful.

📅

No year-end backlogs or surprises

Bookkeeping done monthly means the records are always current. There is no accumulation of uncoded transactions waiting to cause a problem, and no frantic reconstruction of twelve months of activity before a filing deadline. Surprises are largely avoidable when the books are kept up to date throughout the year.

💬

Questions answered the day you ask

You can reach Hasan by phone, email, or WhatsApp — and you will get a response the same day. That means a quick question about an invoice or a VAT threshold does not sit unanswered until a scheduled meeting. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Getting your bookkeeping sorted does not require a lengthy onboarding. Most clients are set up and running within a week of first contact.

1

Get in touch today

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form on this page. We reply the same day. The initial conversation is free and there is no pressure to proceed.

2

We discuss your situation

We will ask about your business, your current records, and what software you are using — or not using yet. If your books are behind, that is not a problem. We will explain what catch-up looks like and give you a fixed-fee quote before anything is agreed.

3

We set up your cloud software

We configure Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent to match your business and connect your bank feeds. If you are moving from another accountant or another system, we handle the transition. You do not need to know how the software works — that is our job.

4

Books clean, month after month

From that point, your records are reconciled on a regular monthly cycle. You always know where the numbers stand, VAT returns are filed on time, and year-end is no longer something to dread. Less of your Sunday evenings in spreadsheets. Which is generally considered an improvement.

Questions

Things people usually ask before getting started

Do you just file the numbers, or do you actually explain what they mean?+

Both. The bookkeeping is kept current every month, and the figures are explained in plain English rather than handed over as a report to interpret alone. If your margins are narrowing, your VAT threshold is approaching, or a payment pattern looks unusual, you will hear about it directly — not at year-end when the options are limited.

What does bookkeeping cost, and what is included in the monthly fee?+

Pricing is fixed monthly and agreed upfront — no hourly rates and no surprise invoices for routine work. The fee covers transaction coding, monthly bank reconciliation, cloud software access, and VAT return preparation where applicable. A quote is provided after the initial free conversation, once we understand the volume and complexity of your business.

My books are behind. Can you still help, and what does catch-up work cost?+

Yes. Clients often arrive with records that are months — occasionally a year or more — behind. Catch-up bookkeeping is handled as a separate piece of work, quoted at a fixed price before anything starts so there are no surprises. Once the books are current, regular monthly bookkeeping begins and the backlog does not happen again.

Is there a long-term contract, or can I leave if it is not working?+

There is no long-term lock-in. If the arrangement is not working after the first few months, you leave with clean, up-to-date records and nothing owed beyond the work completed. The aim is to be the kind of accountant you stay with because it is working well, not because leaving is complicated.

Which bookkeeping software do you use, and do I need to buy it separately?+

Edward Harris works with Xero, QuickBooks Online, and FreeAgent — all of which are Making Tax Digital compliant. Cloud software access and setup is included in the monthly fee for bookkeeping clients, so there is no additional software subscription to manage. Dext is also available for receipt capture if paper records are a common occurrence in your business.

Will clean bookkeeping actually help me pay less tax?+

Accurate, up-to-date books are the starting point for any useful tax planning. When the numbers are current, allowable expenses are captured properly, timing decisions can be made deliberately, and the tax bill is visible months before it is due — not the week before payment is required. That visibility is what makes planning possible.
