Sound familiar?

Still guessing what your tax bill will be?

Most sole traders get to October or November and realise they have no idea what they owe in January. The books are roughly right, the invoices are roughly filed, and the Self Assessment gets done in a rush. It works, until it does not. A surprise tax bill with four weeks to pay it is a specific kind of stress that is largely avoidable.

  • ✕ Self Assessment left until January, tax bill unknown until then
  • ✕ Evenings spent reconciling income and expenses instead of working
  • ✕ No clear picture of profit, meaning no real grip on what to pay yourself

What sorted looks like

When the books are kept current and someone is watching the numbers year-round, the January deadline becomes an admin task rather than a financial shock. You know what is owed well in advance, your records are already tidy, and there is nothing to scramble for.

  • ✓ Tax bill calculated and confirmed months before the HMRC deadline
  • ✓ Bookkeeping handled monthly — no reconciling left for evenings or weekends
  • ✓ Clear monthly picture of profit, drawings, and what to set aside for tax
  • ✓ Fixed monthly fee — no unexpected invoices at year-end

What you get

Everything a sole trader actually needs

From keeping the books straight each month to filing your Self Assessment and planning ahead for tax, the core work is all covered under one fixed fee.

01

Self Assessment and Tax Planning

Your Self Assessment return is prepared accurately and filed well before the January deadline. More usefully, your tax position is reviewed throughout the year so the bill is not a surprise when it arrives. If there are allowable expenses or reliefs you are missing, they get picked up before the return is filed.

Included as standard
02

Bookkeeping and Cloud Accounts

Records kept current every month using Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent — whichever suits how you work. You get a clear, up-to-date picture of income and expenditure without spending your evenings on it. Receipt capture via Dext means paperwork stays off your desk.

Making Tax Digital compliant
03

VAT Returns and MTD Filing

If you are VAT-registered, returns are prepared and submitted on time each quarter under Making Tax Digital requirements. Your turnover is monitored against the registration threshold so you are not caught out by a crossing you did not see coming. No missed deadlines, no late-filing penalties.

Quarterly, no surprises

Why Edward Harris

What makes the difference for sole traders

There are plenty of accountants who will file your return. Fewer who will tell you what is coming before you have to ask.

📅

Tax bill visible months early

Your Self Assessment position is reviewed well before the January deadline, not in the final week of it. That means you know what is owed in October or November, with time to plan for it. No scrambling, no penalty risk, no four-week payment panic.

💬

Questions answered the same day

When something comes up — an HMRC letter, a VAT query, a question about an expense — it gets a same-day response. Clients consistently mention this in reviews because it is not the norm elsewhere. You will not be left waiting a week for a reply to a simple question.

🔍

Plain English, no jargon

Everything is explained in plain English. If there is something you do not understand about your accounts, your tax, or your obligations, you can ask without feeling like you should already know the answer. That is the point of having an accountant who sees their job as helping you understand, not just filing on your behalf.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most clients are set up and handed over within a week of first contact. The process is designed to require as little from you as possible.

1

Get in touch

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form on this page. Replies come the same day. The initial conversation is free and entirely without pressure.

2

Free initial conversation

Hasan will ask about your business, your current setup, and what you need. You will get straight answers about what is involved, what it costs, and whether there is anything that needs catching up. No sales pitch.

3

We handle the handover

If you are switching from another accountant, the transition is managed for you. Previous records are requested, any gaps in the books are identified, and you are set up on cloud accounting software. You do not need to do the admin heavy lifting.

4

Books current, tax visible

From here the books are kept up to date each month, your tax position is clear, and deadlines are handled as a matter of course. Less to think about each week. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

Questions

Things sole traders usually ask us

Do you handle Self Assessment for sole traders with mixed income — employment and self-employment?+

Yes. Returns with multiple income sources, including employment income alongside self-employment, rental income, or dividends, are prepared as a matter of course. The return is reviewed in full before filing so nothing is omitted or duplicated. If there are allowable expenses that are not being claimed, they are flagged before submission.

What does it cost, and what is included?+

Pricing is fixed monthly, agreed upfront, and does not change without notice. The fee covers bookkeeping, Self Assessment preparation and filing, and year-round support for queries. VAT returns and payroll are available as additions if needed. A free quote is available through the form on this page — the price will be confirmed before anything is agreed.

My books are not in great shape. Is that a problem?+

It is a very common starting point. When taking on new clients, the first step is a review of what exists, followed by a catch-up exercise to bring records up to date. The cost of catch-up work is quoted separately and agreed before it begins, so there are no surprises. Once the records are current, the monthly service takes over.

Is there a long-term contract?+

No. There is no minimum tie-in period. If the arrangement is not working, you can leave with one month’s notice and your records are provided in a format your next accountant can use. The aim is to be useful enough that leaving does not come up — but it is never a requirement to stay.

Do I need to visit the office, or can this be done remotely?+

Fully remote service is available for sole traders anywhere in the UK. Everything runs through cloud accounting software, email, and phone. For clients local to Oldham and Greater Manchester, in-person meetings are available if preferred, but most clients manage everything without needing to come in.

Can you help me reduce my tax bill, not just file the return?+

Tax planning is part of the service, not an optional extra. Allowable expenses, timing of income and expenditure, and any available reliefs are reviewed as part of preparing the return. For more involved planning — such as considering whether incorporation makes sense at your current profit level — that conversation can happen at any point during the year.
