Sound familiar?

Books behind and the year-end looming?

For most owner-managed businesses in Manchester, bookkeeping sits at the bottom of the list until it cannot be ignored any longer. The records are somewhere — bank statements, a spreadsheet, a drawer of receipts — but they are not actually reconciled. That means your VAT return becomes a scramble, your tax bill arrives as a surprise, and your actual profit position is largely a guess.

  • ✕ Months of transactions unreconciled and nowhere near VAT-ready
  • ✕ No clear view of profit until the accountant does the year-end — often months later
  • ✕ Time spent chasing bank statements and receipts instead of running the business

What sorted bookkeeping looks like

When your books are handled monthly, the guesswork goes away. Your records are current, your VAT figures are ready before the deadline, and you can see your numbers at any point without waiting for an annual catch-up.

  • ✓ Records reconciled every month — VAT figures ready when you need them
  • ✓ Profit and cash position visible throughout the year, not just at year-end
  • ✓ Receipts and bank data captured digitally — no chasing paperwork at your end
  • ✓ Fixed monthly fee — no hourly billing and no end-of-year invoice surprises

What you get

What the bookkeeping service covers

Monthly bookkeeping for Manchester businesses, built around cloud accounting tools and proactive support — not just data entry.

01

Monthly Bookkeeping and Reconciliation

Your income and expenditure is categorised and reconciled every month using Xero, QuickBooks Online, or FreeAgent. Nothing builds up, and your records are always current. At any point in the year you can see exactly where your business stands financially.

Included as standard
02

VAT Returns and MTD Compliance

Your VAT return is prepared directly from your bookkeeping records, so there is no last-minute scramble pulling figures together. Making Tax Digital compliance is handled as part of the service — your submissions are filed correctly and on time. VAT threshold monitoring is included, so you will not cross the registration threshold without knowing it.

Included as standard
03

Receipt Capture and Cloud Setup

Dext is used for receipt capture, meaning invoices and expenses are logged digitally as they happen rather than sitting in a drawer waiting to be entered. If you are not already on cloud accounting software, setup and migration are handled as part of onboarding. The result is less manual work at your end and cleaner data throughout the year.

Why Edward Harris

Why Manchester businesses switch to us

Not every bookkeeper asks whether your numbers are actually useful to you. Here is where the approach is different.

📋

Books that tell you something

Bookkeeping done purely for compliance means your records are technically correct but not especially informative. At Edward Harris, monthly bookkeeping is structured so your figures give you a usable view of profit and cash — not just a set of numbers for the year-end accountant. You should be able to look at your accounts and understand your business position without needing an interpretation.

📅

No year-end scramble

When bookkeeping is handled monthly, the year-end is a formality rather than a crisis. Your records are current, your VAT is filed, and your figures are ready to pass straight to the accounts preparation. The last-minute rush to find invoices from eighteen months ago simply does not happen. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

💬

Questions get answered the same day

Slow responses are one of the most common complaints about accountants. Queries at Edward Harris are answered the day they are asked — by phone, email, or WhatsApp. If something changes in your business mid-year and you need to know the bookkeeping implication, you can ask without waiting a week for a reply.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most new clients are fully set up within a week. The process requires very little from you beyond a brief conversation and access to your accounts.

1

Get in touch today

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or use the contact form. We reply the same day. The initial conversation is free and without any pressure to proceed.

2

Free initial conversation

We talk through your current bookkeeping situation, what software you are using if any, and what you actually need from the service. You get a clear picture of what is involved and a fixed monthly price — before committing to anything.

3

Onboarding and setup

We handle the cloud accounting setup or migration, connect your bank feeds, and get your records current. If there is catch-up work needed for earlier months, that is agreed upfront at a fixed cost — no open-ended hourly billing.

4

Your books run themselves

From that point, your bookkeeping is handled monthly as a matter of course. Your VAT is filed on time, your records are current, and your numbers are available whenever you need them. You get on with running the business.

Questions

Things people ask before getting started

Do you handle bookkeeping for businesses across Manchester, or only in Oldham?+

Edward Harris is based in Oldham but works with businesses across Greater Manchester and the UK. Local clients in Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Bury, Rochdale, and surrounding areas are welcome to meet in person. Clients further afield are served fully remotely with no reduction in service — cloud accounting means geography is largely irrelevant to how the bookkeeping runs.

What does bookkeeping cost, and what exactly is included?+

Pricing is fixed monthly — there is no hourly billing and no invoice at the end of the year for work you did not expect. The monthly fee covers transaction categorisation, bank reconciliation, VAT return preparation, and MTD compliance. Receipt capture through Dext and cloud accounting software setup are included with advisory services. An exact figure is provided after the initial conversation once we understand the volume and complexity of your accounts.

My books are several months behind. Can you still help?+

Yes, and it is a common starting point. Catch-up bookkeeping is agreed at a fixed cost upfront before any work begins, so there are no surprises about what it will cost to get current. Once the backlog is cleared, the monthly service takes over and it stays current going forward. The process is straightforward — we have done it many times.

Is there a long-term contract or a minimum commitment?+

There is no long-term contract. The service runs on a monthly basis and you can leave with reasonable notice. If the arrangement is not working after three months, you will leave with clean, up-to-date books — which is a better position than most businesses start in. The aim is that you stay because the service is useful, not because you are locked in.

Which accounting software do you use, and do I need to set anything up?+

Edward Harris is certified in Xero, QuickBooks Online, and FreeAgent. If you already use one of these, we connect to your existing account. If you are not yet on cloud software, setup and migration are handled as part of onboarding. You do not need to do anything beyond providing access — the technical setup is handled at our end.

Will my bookkeeping give me a clear view of what my tax bill is likely to be?+

It should — and that is one of the practical differences between bookkeeping done monthly versus annually. When your records are current throughout the year, your profit position is visible in real time rather than as a year-end surprise. Tax planning conversations become possible earlier in the year, when there is still time to act on them. Proactive tax planning is available as part of the broader advisory service.
