Construction Business Accounting

Construction Business Accountant

Your construction accounts, properly handled.

  • CIS returns filed on time, every month, without chasing
  • VAT reverse charge applied correctly so HMRC has nothing to query

  • Year-end accounts prepared without a last-minute scramble

Initial conversations are free and without pressure. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Still not sure where the money went this month?

Construction businesses are busy by nature — but that busyness has a habit of producing books that nobody has looked at since last quarter. CIS deductions go unreconciled. The VAT reverse charge catches people off guard. And the tax bill at year-end is always somehow larger than expected. None of that is unusual, but it is largely avoidable.

  • ✕ CIS deductions unreconciled and subcontractor records in disarray
  • ✕ VAT reverse charge applied inconsistently, creating risk of HMRC errors
  • ✕ No visibility on the tax bill until the accountant rings in January

What sorted looks like

With the right accountant, construction finances are considerably less complicated. CIS is handled monthly. VAT is applied correctly first time. And your tax position is reviewed throughout the year, not just at the end of it.

  • ✓ CIS payroll filed monthly, subcontractor records clean and current
  • ✓ VAT reverse charge handled correctly, no queries, no corrections
  • ✓ Tax bill visible months in advance, no unwelcome surprises
  • ✓ Fixed monthly fee — no hourly rates, no invoices you were not expecting

He’s kind, response, easy to deal with, and really a great member to make up your team. 10/10 recommend.

Why Edward Harris

Why construction businesses choose us over a general accountant

Construction accounting has its own rules and its own pressure points. These are the reasons it makes a difference to work with someone who already knows them.

🏗️

No explaining CIS from scratch

CIS deductions, gross payment status applications, subcontractor verification, monthly returns — you will not need to walk us through how it works before getting a useful answer. Construction Industry Scheme compliance is a regular part of the work here, not an occasional edge case. That familiarity means fewer errors and less time spent on your end.

📋

Tax bill visible before year-end

A proactive review of your tax position throughout the year means the figure at year-end is not arriving cold. If there is a legitimate way to reduce the bill, that conversation happens in autumn — not after the January deadline has passed. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

💬

Questions answered the day you ask

Construction jobs move quickly. When a query comes up about a subcontractor payment, a VAT invoice, or a CIS certificate, a same-day answer matters more than a three-day email chain. Phone, email, and WhatsApp are all available — and responses arrive the same day, Monday to Friday.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Switching accountants or starting fresh — both are straightforward. Here is what the process looks like from your end.

1

Get in touch

Call 0161 706 1523, email info@edwardharris.co.uk, or fill in the contact form. We reply the same day. The initial conversation is free and without pressure — there is nothing to prepare beforehand.

2

Free initial conversation

We talk through your situation — what you are currently doing, what is not working, and what support would actually be useful. No sales pitch. By the end of the call you will know exactly what is involved and what it costs.

3

We handle the handover

If you are switching from another accountant, we take care of the transfer of records and any catch-up work that is needed. If your books are behind, that is not unusual — it gets sorted as part of getting started. You do not need to do much beyond sharing access.

4

Your books clean, tax visible

Once everything is in order, the monthly rhythm takes over. CIS is handled, VAT is filed, and your numbers are current. The tax bill is no longer something that arrives uninvited. You get on with running the business while the accounting side is handled.

Questions

Things construction business owners usually ask

Do you actually understand CIS — gross payment status, subcontractor verification, monthly returns?+

Yes. CIS payroll is part of the regular work here, not something handled occasionally on request. That covers monthly returns to HMRC, subcontractor deduction calculations, gross payment status applications, and verification. If a subcontractor disputes their deduction statement, the records are already in order to deal with it.

What does it cost and what is included?+

Pricing is fixed and agreed upfront — no hourly rates and no invoices you were not expecting. What is included depends on your situation: sole trader or limited company, whether CIS payroll is needed, VAT registration status, and so on. The free initial conversation is the right place to get a specific figure. There is no pressure and nothing to pay for having the conversation.

My books are a mess and I am behind on CIS returns. Can you still help?+

That is a fairly common starting point. Catch-up work — whether that is unreconciled books, overdue CIS returns, or a self assessment that has been sitting untouched — is handled as part of getting started. There may be a one-off fee for the catch-up depending on how far behind things are, but that is discussed and agreed before any work begins.

Is there a minimum contract or a lock-in period?+

No long-term contract. The arrangement runs month to month. If it is not working for any reason, you are free to move on. You leave with clean books, all your records, and nothing owed beyond the current period. That is the way it should be.

How does VAT reverse charge work for construction and do you handle it correctly?+

The domestic reverse charge for construction services shifts VAT accounting responsibility from the subcontractor to the main contractor in certain circumstances. Getting it wrong — applying standard VAT where reverse charge should apply, or vice versa — creates problems with HMRC. This is applied correctly as a matter of course, and your VAT returns reflect the right treatment from the outset.

Can you help reduce my tax bill, not just file the return?+

Filing the return is the baseline. The more useful work is the conversation that happens before the deadline — reviewing your profit position, considering allowable expenses and capital allowances on plant and equipment, and structuring things in a way that reduces the liability where possible. That review happens during the year, not as an afterthought once the figures are finalised.
